Over 300 participants attended EUROPUR and EURO-MOULDERS annual conference in Milan (7-8 June)
A good part of the flexible PU foam supply chain, including representives of over 40 different foam producers, gathered in Milan on 7 and 8 June to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the invention of polyurethanes and discuss innovation and the future of our industry.
The main theme of the event was "Innovation: Products, Processes, People".
It was also the focus of a panel discussion animated by Wolfgang Friederichs (PU Magazine International) between different parts of the supply chain represented by Kate Johnson (Shell), Rohit Talwar, Angel Vinas (IPF) Fiorella Villa (B&B Italia) and Felix Lobkowicz (Eve Sleep).
During the panel, participants notably discussed how to attract and retain talents in an our industry, which is facing a generation change, and how a manufacturing industry that can sometimes be considered as relatively traditional can make use of connected technology in its production processes and in the products that are placed on the market. Concrete examples of how digitalization can improve flexible PU foam production already today and how the foam industry can make use of big data were provided in presentations given on 8 June by the companies Fecken-Kirfel, IPF, FoamPartner and Covestro.
In the evening of 7 June, participants could enjoy a dinner in the Museum of Science and Technology kindly sponsored by Shell. The Italian Association of Flexible PU Foam Blocks Producers (AIPEF) had seized the occasion of EUROPUR's presence in the museum to organize an exhibition around PU foam. This exhibition was addressed primarily to local schools and press, which were invited to visit it to learn about PU foam and its many applications.
On 8 June, participants focused on discussing technical issues relating to PU foam or topics dealt with throughout the year in EUROPUR and EURO-MOUDERS Working Groups. These included for example changes in chemical legislation, flame retardants, new catalysts, micro-encapsulated phase-change material or the use of micronized rubber in PU foam production.
This is of course only a short summary of the event. All presentations made at the event are posted on our extranet for EUROPUR and EURO-MOULDERS members to download.
We wish to thank all the speakers and people who contributed to organize the event, notably our Communication Working Group, the team at Shell and the team at our Italian member association AIPEF. A short video summary of the event can be viewed HERE.
