EUROPUR Supports 'Circular Plastics Made in Europe' Campaign
As we discuss “Made in Europe” and as an increasing number of EU legislations introduce recycled content requirements for plastics — including PPWR and ELVR, and likely ESPR for furniture and mattresses in the future — we are pleased to support the Circular Plastics Made in Europe campaign.
Circular Plastics Made in Europe is a Europe-wide campaign initiative created to protect and strengthen Europe’s (EU27+EFTA+UK) circular economy.
The goal is simple and clear: ensure that only plastic waste generated within Europe counts toward the EU’s recycled content targets. Today, Europe risks meeting its circularity goals by importing recycled plastics from outside Europe. This undermines Europe’s recycling industry, contradicts the EU’s efforts to end waste exports, and threatens the billions already invested in domestic recycling infrastructure.
This initiative brings together industry partners, recyclers, NGOs, policymakers, and citizens to defend a fair and consistent circular economy framework. By aligning behind one principle — our waste must be recycled at home — we can support European jobs, safeguard innovation, and build a circular economy rooted in responsibility and transparency.
For polyurethanes, closed-loop solutions for recycled content already exist. Several of our member companies recycle post-consumer foam from mattresses to create new raw materials for polyurethane production. Others are developing solutions to recycle polyurethane foams from automotive applications.
Supporting European recycled content will help ensure that plastic recycling grows and thrives in Europe, rather than decline as we are currently witnessing. Let’s provide recycled content for Europe with waste from Europe!
